Why former opposition leader seems tired of elections, changing constitution an easy way to government without sweat.

Why would 2010 constitution be changed because of one person refusal to acknowledge defeat? Our presidential system of governance is perfect and working well in other democracies where winners take it all – a case in point USA.

Republicans have never complained bitterly when they loose to Democrats or vice versa. They have never proposed to change the constitution to accommodate the defeated. The winner takes everything and forms government until the next election. Americans are satisfied with this system for over 200 years now.

In Kenya this system has been tested with one president candidate against one opponent candidate. The opponent who has lost and even withdrawn from a repeat election has convinced the president that the system of presidential election is wrong. The president without blinking or involving Kenyans has accepted the conversation and together they are convincing Kenyans that the winner take it all is a bad system.

Throughout the debate the ruling government is struggling to convince Kenyans despite not implementing it’s looker like meningococcal policies that winner take it all is the problem of a country called Kenya. The BBI deception is divisive and splitting the debate on constitution into Implement the constitution fully against change the constitution now.

Amid covid 19 pandemic, one would expect the government to convince Kenyans that it is up to its main task of providing public essentials and handling novel pandemic professionally. That’s not the case. Billions at Kemsa facility have disappeared within thin air, with unconfrimed reports indicating that known men in former opposition party have been involved in the scam, yet that does not disturb the former leader of opposition, he has been caught between a cliff and the deep ocean.

To him Kemsa debate is not important, BBI is all important and constitution is a must. This comes in the wake of companies laying off workers, landlords chasing tenants for non payment of rental spaces, schools closed down, everything and anything in a skirt not skipping impregnation, auctioneers running after heels of businesses etc.

The former opposition leader and the president are out of touch with realities on the ground. They are determined to see their scheme go through. Their forceful referendum will be rejected by Kenyans and that moment will be a perfect vote of no confidence in the outgoing president and his counter part former opposition leader.

A big question should be, what interest does an outgoing president have in changing the constitution if he doesn’t want to perpetuate himself in power? For whose use is he changing the constitution? What interest does the former opposition leader have in changing the constitution his opponent used to keep him in opposition for 10 years?

The schemes behind the clamour to change the constitution is a clear indication that the current president is not leaving power soon and the former opposition leader is not interested in free and fair elections. The former opposition leader seems tired of elections and changing constitution is an easy way to government without sweat.

For how long will Kenyans continue being on their own, watching the elite political class shift goals as long as the goals are helping them hold tightly to the grip of power? There seem to be a veil of fear behind this forceful change of constitution. A deliberate thinker will conclude the ruling class is uncertain of the future, they seem not to trust anyone who will ascend to power after them.

Why would such fear be prevalent within the ruling elitist? Buddha once said, you will lose what you cling to. The best way to have more power is not to want it. But as the country grapples with a myriad of issues, bad economy, corruption, there is one community that is enjoying public appointment with disregard for others. The ruling class has demonstrated that the best way to keep power is to want it more. This is a bad strategy and in the long run, they will lose power.
