RUTO’S SELF DESTRUCTION
By Kiberenge Jnr 14/4/2020

The vicious battle for the control of Jubilee Party pitting Uhuru on one side and Ruto on the other marks the second phase of Uhuru’s determination to take control of the 2022 succession. Everything else can be postponed due to covid19, but not this one. One may ask; why the second phase? I will answer here. The first phase was eliminating of Ruto’s clout in the running of the Government, and which Uhuru did very successfully.

During the first term of the Jubilee regime, Uhuru behaved as a lame duck President and left everything to Ruto. Uhuru was simply a hostage to Ruto – a hostage in the sense of ‘’you either toe the line or no second term for you’’. The second in command took advantage of the powers bestowed on him and planted his cronies and political sympathizers in key money minting state departments. As soon as Uhuru took oath of office for his second term, he embarked on a vicious mission to eliminate Ruto’s cronies from state departments.

Several of them are currently facing economic crimes charges in courts. Consequently, Uhuru managed to regain power over the running of the Governement, effectively pushing Ruto to the periphery. The last nail in reducing Ruto a spectator in Governement operations was the elevation of Dr Matiangi to a Super CS in charge of chairing the powerful cabinet subcommittee of Development and Communication and overseeing development, a role initially played by Ruto during the first term.

The no nonsense Matiangi has no time for Ruto. The Second in Command, like Jaramogi in 1965, was left with the title and the salary to his title. Jaramogi resigned.

So while Uhuru was a lame duck President in 2013-17, Ruto made sure he had control over three key areas namely running of government, parliamentary leadership and total control of Jubilee Party. Uhuru and his associates remained spectators as Ruto ran the show.

Total control of Jublee party is currently at stake, conveniently concealed by the covid19 pandemic. Ruto took sweeping control over Jubilee Party by making sure that all the organs of the Party are dominated by his cronies, proxies, stooges and political sympathizers, effectively making Uhuru a toothless bull dog in party matters.

This was very clear the elections board dominated by his cronies unanimously endorsed Macdold Mariga to contest on the Party ticket in Kibra against the wishes of Uhuru and a section of party officials aligned to him.

Anyway, Uhuru was forced to accept the decision of the election board, albeit reluctantly with the gesture of ‘’we shall revisit it another day’’. That revisiting is what is underway. There is every indication that Ruto will lose, or has already lost the battle. The desperation was clear when he took to twitter ranting and cursing. But why take it to twitter when he has been assuring all and sundry that him and the President consult daily? That is a discussion for another day. What is clear, however, is that for everything he loses, he must take to twitter.

After Uluru is done eliminating Ruto’s clout in Party management, the next and last battle is removing his stooges from key parliamentary leadership positions and committees including majority leaders, whips and committee chairmen.

Ruto set himself for war when he profiled Uhuru as a dynasty who should be fought. We are headed for very interesting times ahead in a no holds barred -bare knuckled- gloves off duel. It is simply self destruction for Ruto.

Meanwhile, wash your hands, sanitize, keep social distance
