As the official election calendar begins taking distinct shape, political intensity is rising sharply across the country. Gatina Ward in Dagoretti North Constituency is fast becoming one of the most hotly contested electoral battlegrounds in Nairobi City County.

​Home to an energetic population of over 50,000 residents, the expansive ward is gearing up for an electioneering period of unprecedented magnitude. Over 20 aspirants have stepped forward to challenge the incumbent, Hon. Kennedy Swaka, who was elected on an ODM ticket. While ODM has traditionally enjoyed deep-rooted support in Gatina, the party now faces formidable opposition from the Edwin Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi movement and Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy and Development Party (DCP).

​The Rise of Wakili Sichangi Nyongesa

​Amid a crowding field of over 30 candidates, legal practitioner Wakili Sichangi Nyongesa is steadily emerging as a standout contender.

​Anchoring his campaign on constitutional literacy, Wakili Sichangi has taken a grassroots approach to engaging Gatina residents—demystifying the core mandates of the Member of County Assembly (MCA): legislation, representation, and oversight.

​“My candidature is unique in the sense that I want to let my people know that the role of an MCA is legislation, representation, and oversighting the county boss—the Governor. If the role of representation and oversight is clearly executed, services will naturally trickle down to Gatina Ward,” states Wakili Sichangi.

​Infrastructure, Public Health, and Governance

​Gatina Ward faces persistent service delivery hurdles, ranging from dilapidated road networks to poor drainage and sanitation infrastructure. Wakili Nyongesa’s platform focuses heavily on structural reform and accountable county resource allocation.

​“My leadership will have an open-door policy where the people of Gatina will have a direct say in governance. We shall ensure robust public participation takes place so that we deliver precisely what our people so dearly need,” he asserts.

​Addressing the ward’s sanitation and access challenges, Wakili Sichangi promises to aggressively lobby the county executive for long-term development solutions:

​“We cannot be paying taxes while a population of over 50,000 people lives in an unclean environment. We cannot be fighting to stock medicine in our health facilities yet subjecting our people to environmental conditions that make them sick in the first place.”

​His development agenda prioritizes carpeting key access roads, installing street lighting across trading centers, upgrading the sewer network, and establishing a reliable, 7-day water supply for residents.

​Clearing the Air: “I Am Ready for the Ballot”

​Dismissing rumors circulating on social media regarding his potential withdrawal from the race, Wakili Sichangi made his political stance clear:

​“The propaganda doing rounds on social media that I have stepped down is only meant to massage the egos of my competitors. I have immense respect for all those who wish to represent Gatina. I can only wish them well and state here clearly: let us meet on the ballot. My fate will be decided by the good people of Gatina in August 2027, and based on the groundwork we have laid, victory is yonder.”

​Community Empowerment & Legal Aid

​Beyond political declarations, Wakili Sichangi has built deep community connections across Gatina Ward through sustained socio-economic initiatives targeting youth and women self-help groups.

​“Wakili Sichangi has been of immense value to us. When he is not empowering our self-help groups, he is offering free legal aid to many of our people who cannot afford advocates’ fees,” remarked one local resident.

​As the political heat intensifies ahead of 2027, Wakili Sichangi Nyongesa continues to position himself not just as a candidate, but as a transformative legislative leader ready to rewrite the governance story of Gatina Ward.
