With roughly 345 days to the next general election, Dagoretti North has transformed into a high-stakes political battlefield. Traditionally a fortress for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the constituency’s political ecosystem is facing an acid test. The current acrimony and shifting dynamics within ODM, compounded by the eventual transition following the era of former party leader Raila Odinga, have dramatically reshaped the terrain.
For incumbent MP Beatrice Elachi, the heightened political maneuvers across the constituency have set off alarm bells, casting doubt over her reelection prospects despite the formal power of her incumbency.
The Incumbent’s Fragile Foothold
Elachi’s journey in Dagoretti North has always been a tightrope walk. She first contested the seat in 2017 on a Jubilee Party ticket, putting up a strong performance to finish second behind the eventual winner, Simba Arati.
On her second attempt, she switched allegiance to ODM and secured the party’s direct nomination that ultimately paved her way to Parliament. Today, however, that political safety net has worn thin, and her grip on the constituency is being challenged both from within her adopted party and by a surging tide of external opponents.
Party Mutiny and the Alai Strikeback
The internal fissures in her political backyard became glaringly evident during the battle for the Dagoretti North ODM chairmanship. The seat, left vacant when Simba Arati relocated his political base to Kisii, was being held in an interim capacity by Kilimani MCA Moses Ogeto.
When the party called grassroots elections to regularize leadership, Elachi threw her hat into the ring backed by three ODM elected MCAs. Ogeto, running a grounded, solo campaign powered by deep-rooted connections with the electorate, handed Elachi’s alliance a resounding defeat. Before the incumbent could fully recover from that loss, her ally-turned-foe Robert Alai declared his own parliamentary bid, further destabilizing her camp and exposing her political vulnerabilities under the banner of the broad-based government arrangement.
The Quiet Ogeto Factor
Adding to Elachi’s internal headaches is the lingering, quiet threat posed by Ogeto himself. Rather than celebrating his victory over the party machinery, the three-time Kilimani ward representative has kept his cards close to his chest, focusing on constituent service while stepping up “meet and greet” tours across the wider constituency. Ogeto’s calculated movements have fueled intense speculation about a potential parliamentary run, a move that would directly threaten those he previously outmaneuvered in the party polls.
The Linda Mwananchi Wave and External Fronts
Beyond the ODM family, fresh battlefronts are opening rapidly. S.K. Karanja, who contested on a UDA ticket in 2022, has pivoted to Rigathi Gachagua’s Democratic Congress Party (DCP) and is actively mobilizing grassroots support.
Simultaneously, the Edwin Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi movement is proving to be a major disruption in the area. Bright Shitemi has hit the ground running under this banner, building a strong youth movement and making deep inroads with the local boda boda sector across the constituency’s stages.
Other figures aligned with or adjacent to the movement—including Mokaya Karaya, Wakili Makhanu, Caleb Sunguti, and Kelly Watima—are steadily working the ground and keeping the pressure high.
A Crowded Field of Hungry Challengers
The opposition lineup is further diversified by strong individual campaigns across the political spectrum. Dr. Bosibori Norah of the Wiper Party has effectively painted parts of Dagoretti North blue, leveraging her “Educate, Empower, and Enlighten” platform to establish herself as a formidable alternative.
Meanwhile, first-time contenders like R. Ng’eno and Wakili Mirimo Nyongesa are carving out their own niches. Nyongesa, in particular, has struck a chord with younger voters through his “Team Confirm” movement and homegrown appeal.
As the countdown to the polls continues, Dagoretti North remains a pressure cooker of competing political interests. With threats emerging from her former party allies, grassroots organizers, and energized opposition movements, Beatrice Elachi faces the toughest fight of her political career to retain the seat.
