SONKO SUES INTERIOR PS KIBICHO AND CS MATIANG’I OVER SONKO RESCUE TEAM DISRUPTIONS

The High Court has today temporarily barred the government from interfering with the Sonko Rescue Team’s operations of distributing free sanitizers and other food items in the fight against Covid-19 pending hearing and determination of the suit.

Sonko Rescue Team (SRT)has sued Interior Ministry CS Fred Matiang’i, PS Karanja Kibicho and IG Hilary Mutyambai over the destruction and removal of its sanitizer booths set up at various locations in Nairobi to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Government agencies descended on Sonko’s covid 19 installations in Kibra, Kencom and Mathare a mid murmurs from Nairobians. The govt further barred Sonko and or his agents (Srt) from distributing food to vulnerable Nairobians.

“Pending the hearing and determination of this Notice of Motion, a Conservatory Order do issue, by way of an injunction to forthwith restrain the 1st, 2nd, 4TH Respondent and the 5th Respondent by themselves, their officials, or any person, servant, and/or agent of the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Respondents, acting under or at their behest, from interfering with the charitable non-profit functions of the Petitioner including free distribution of the items specified in paragraph 18 and 22 of the Petition herein,”s the order read in part.

Kibicho and Matiang’i have been listed as 1st and second respondents while Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, Nairobi Regional Security Commissioner Wilson Njenga, Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai and the Attorney General as 3rd, 4th and Fifth respectively.

Court documents seen by Goodmorning Kenya show that the Sonko Rescue Team claims it has lost over Ksh.5 million following the destruction which it saye were installed at a cost of Ksh.400,000 each, adding that the National Government is sabotaging charitable efforts selectively amid covid 19 pandemic.

Lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, appearing for the team has accused Kagwe together with Nairobi Regional Security Commissioner Wilson Njega of interfering with the charitable works meant to fight the spread of COVID 19

According to the court documents filed Tuesday, sanitizer booths brought down were installed at Kencom Bus Stop, Buruburu shopping Centre and Kibera slum

“Why is the government defeating the very efforts of fighting covid 19 the very monster it intend to win against” Mr Aseka a city dweller wondered
