Embakasi East July Poll: Hon. Stazo Omung’ala Leads MP Race, But Babu Owino Tops the Field if He Re-Joins Contest

NAIROBI, Kenya

A July opinion poll on the Embakasi East parliamentary race has placed Upper Savannah MCA Hon. Stazo Elijah Omung’ala firmly ahead of the pack among candidates seeking to succeed the current Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, should the incumbent opt to pursue the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election

.According to the survey, Hon. Stazo commands 44 percent support among respondents, opening a significant lead over his closest rivals. Francis Mureithi follows with 23 percent while Tina Ogal ranks third with 13 percent.

The rest of the field trails considerably, with Cosmo Choy attracting 6 percent support, while Stephen Maina Waruinge records 4 percent Michael Ogada who has expressed interest in contesting for the Embakasi Ward MCA seat, also features in the survey with comparatively lower support. The findings suggest that Hon. Stazo has established himself as the early favourite among voters looking for a successor to Babu Owino if the current MP decides to focus on the Nairobi gubernatorial race

.Political observers attribute Stazo’s strong showing to his growing visibility across Embakasi East and his record as the two-term Member of the County Assembly for Upper Savannah Ward. He currently serves as the Deputy Majority Whip in the Nairobi County Assembly and as the ODM Nairobi Youth Presiden positions that have further elevated his profile within county politics. The survey indicates that his strongest support comes from Upper Savannah Ward where he has served for two consecutive terms, followed closely by Lower Savannah where he also enjoys considerable backing.Notably, although Hon. Stazo currently leads the approval ratings among potential successors, he has not officially declared his intention to contest the Embakasi East parliamentary seat. As with any opinion poll conducted before candidates formally enter the race, voter preferences may evolve once aspirants officially declare their bids, political parties begin nominations, and campaigns gather momentum. His current approval rating therefore reflects the prevailing public mood at the time of the survey and could change as the political landscape develops.Former Embakasi Ward MCA Michael Ogada, who previously served as the Majority Whip in the Nairobi County Assembly, also features in the poll but records comparatively lower support. However, the political landscape changes significantly if the incumbent, Babu Owino chooses to seek re-election instead of contesting the Nairobi governorship. In that scenario, the survey shows Babu Owino maintaining a commanding lead with an approval rating of 51 percent, reflecting his continued popularity among Embakasi East voters.

Hon. Stazo would then rank second with 32 percent, while the remaining candidates share the balance of support. The results point to a race that is largely dependent on Babu Owino’s final political decision. Should he shift his attention to City Hall, Hon. Stazo appears well-positioned to become the front-runner in the contest to represent Embakasi East in Parliament. Conversely, if Babu seeks another parliamentary term, the poll suggests he would begin the race as the clear favourite. With more than a year before political campaigns officially gather momentum, the findings provide an early snapshot of voter sentiment in one of Nairobi’s most politically active constituencies, where alliances, party nominations, and candidates’ grassroots mobilization are expected to shape the final outcome.
