Nairobi County Executive Committee member for Sports, talent, skills development and care Brian Mulama yesterday, Saturday 15th April, 2023 officially opened the newly constructed basketball court at Jericho’s Camp Toyoyo in Nairobi’s Eastlands area.
The Camp Toyoyo was constructed courtesy of a public-private partnership between the Nairobi City County Government and beverage brand company Hennessy.
Mulama said that the construction of the court will help the youth in the area develop their skills in the sport as the county seeks to nurture sports talent across the county.
“This is a very welcome move for our youth to have sports facilities to play and grow their talent which is a form of employment world over,” Mulama noted.
He thanked Governor Johnson Sakaja for spearheading talent development efforts in Nairobi with this newest development that was jointly funded by the City County Government and Hennessy.
“It has been great partnering with Hennessy in the construction of Jericho basketball court in Makadara Constituency. To the people of Jericho and Nairobi City, Governor Johnson Sakaja truly loves you and will continue bringing development to the people of Nairobi and I therefore urge you to utilize the facility to the maximum,” Mulama said.
Mulama was accompanied to the hand over ceremony of the court by the Nairobi County Executive Committee member for Innovation and Digital Economy Michael Gumo, Chief officer sports Hon Oscar Igaida, officials from Hennessy other county government staff and the basketball fraternity.
While challenging the youths to take advantage of the facility , Mr Igaida said that the facility will go along way in helping the community.
“With the launch of this facility, cases of crime, drugs, early pregnancies and general idleness will be reduced immensely. We also expect the basketball federation to put this facility to good use by hosting its events here” said Oscar.
The county government under the leadership of Governor Sakaja has been at the forefront in developing sports facilities with the construction of the new state of art Dandora Stadium now 80 percent complete and the building of a football field and county social hall in Mwiki ward ongoing among many others
