Two groups in Gor Mahia Fan’s base emerge to lay claim on the famous brand name: Kulundeng.

The term ‘Kulundeng’ is a Luo word meaning fruit Chafer Beetle. It is a common name among the Luo community but as it comes to Gor Mahia fan base, the name has assumed a serious significance, it has become a brand on itself. This brand is so huge that rival groups withing the supporting fraternity are out to claim its ownership.

According to the website of one of the groups www.kulundeng.or.ke the name was introduced into Gor Mahia circles in early 2011 when a young boy by the name Edwin Lavatsa who had just finished his High School at Upper Hill High – Nairobi had just been signed by the club.

As a tradition, many players who join the club are always nicknamed or given names by their supporters. Kulundeng was one of the names that was suggested to Edwin Lavasta but he was later named Bajaj. Bajaj is a famous motorbike and is known for its fast speed. So the name Kulundeng remained within the club circles and that is why the two groups are laying claim on it.

It was on the 6th of september, 2011 where a fan by the Malik Ogonji Odak (REST IN PEACE) made a post to suggest or that read- I THINK ITS TYME WE GIVE LAVASTA A NICK NAME. On that day, a guy by the name Enrique Fabrice Ochieng mentioned Kulundeng as the nick name for Edwin Lavasta.

So as the rival groups push for the use of the name, at the moment we hope you now know the little history of the name.
