Safaricom nabs online fraudsters and conmen as it empowers you.

Safaricom the biggest telcom comapany in the country introduces a security feature which alerts you when crooks tries to register a new SIM card with your ID number, in an attempt to curb fraud.

With the new technology when a person tries to register an SMS you will receive a notification via 707. In the event it is not you you will reply with NO prompting the registration to stop.

In the country there have been mutltiple cases of fraud where con artists have been using details of other people who might have lost their IDs or details collected from Mpesa Agents to con Kenyans with unkown identity. The technology will protect many customers and innocent Kenyans.

This comes in the wake of DCI announcing that there is an increased Online crime and there are a bunch of fraudsters selling air by phising emails. They said,

“Messages accompanying such links are enticingly packaged with captivating words meant to prompt potential but unsuspecting victims to click onto them with a promise of getting something declared therein,”

While on it DCI officers arresated a local bank employee including two students who are suspected in the cyber crime syndicate.

According to information from DCI, 400 mobile sim cards, eight National Identification Cards (ID), two laptops and four mobile phones were recovered from the trio during the operation.

Details of these fellows are Kevin Oroko, the bank employee who is a software developer and Ian Kinanga and Jefferson Bosire. They using links which contain malware that gives the scammers access to one’s personal details, passwords, that could be used to extort, for cyberbullying, stealing of finances among other ills.

Online Shoppers were asked to remain vigilant and refrain from sharing financial and personal details while ideally discouraging use of Free Wi-Fi.
