The Rise of ‘Kijana ya Mtaa’: How Oscar Binyenya is Shaking Up the Race for Gatina Ward -2027.

As the 2027 election countdown officially begins, a grassroots movement led by a local entrepreneur promises to rewrite the story of one of Dagoretti North’s most vibrant yet underserved communities.

August 10, 2026, was no ordinary Monday. Marking exactly one year to the next General Election constitutionally set for the second Tuesday of August every five years the date officially triggered the countdown. While the milestone sends a chill down the spines of incumbents across the country, it serves as a rallying call for fresh political aspirants ready to challenge the status quo.

In Dagoretti North’s Gatina Ward, that disruption has a face and a popular name: Oscar Binyenya, affectionately known to locals as Kijana ya Mtaa.

His moniker is not just a catchy political slogan; it is a badge earned through grit and hard work. Oscar’s story is a classic Nairobi hustle: arriving in the city years ago armed with little more than hope and ambition, he made Gatina his first home. Rather than letting the harsh urban reality dampen his spirit, it fueled his drive. Today, he is a successful businessman operating several enterprises, including eateries in neighboring Lavington, while remaining deeply rooted in the estate that raised him.

Now, he has set his sights on serving as Gatina Ward’s next Member of County Assembly (MCA).

Living the Reality, Driving the Change

Goodmorning Kenya News caught up with Binyenya at one of his Lavington establishments to understand why he chose to throw his hat into the ring for Gatina.

”I was born and raised in a humble background in Western Kenya. Like many young people, I dreamt of coming to the capital to build a better life,”

Binyenya reflects.

When I settled in Gatina, I realized my vision couldn’t just be about personal success,it had to be about transforming the community that welcomed me. My second home!”

Gatina Ward is home to over 50,000 families living in informal settlements, facing persistent challenges including inadequate water supply, poor drainage, insecurity, high youth unemployment, and under-resourced health and educational facilities.

”Subsequent leaderships have attempted to tackle these issues with limited success,” Binyenya notes. “Having lived through these exact struggles myself, I don’t just view them as statistics on paper. I understand the human reality behind them. That is why I am uniquely equipped to fix the mess.”

Tackling Crime, Addiction, and Youth Empowerment

Statistical data shows Gatina Ward struggles with high rates of youth crime, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancies. Rather than waiting for public office to act, Binyenya has already been working on the frontlines to address these social crises.

The Voice of the Grassroots

Binyenya’s hands on approach has earned him deep trust among Gatina residents, who view him as one of their own.

”We have known Oscar long enough to trust him with leadership,” says Musa, a longtime Gatina resident. “He doesn’t just show up during campaign season. He stands with families during grief, supports local children’s homes, and his crusade against crime is actively saving our young people. We are praying for his success because his victory is Gatina’s victory.”

A New Chapter for Gatina

Running on a three-pillar platform,Inspire, Empower, and Transform, Binyenya’s campaign machine is rapidly gaining momentum across the ward.

As the clock ticks toward August 10, 2027, the political landscape in Dagoretti North is shifting. If his growing grassroots support is anything to go by, Kijana ya Mtaa isn’t just running a campaign, he is leading a transformation that could comfortably carry him all the way to the County Assembly.
