In a significant step towards reducing food waste and strengthening food security, Majid Al Futtaim Retail, the exclusive operator of Carrefour in Kenya, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Food Banking Kenya (FBK) to redistribute safe, surplus food to vulnerable communities nationwide.

Under the partnership, Carrefour will channel edible surplus food through daily collections and deliveries managed by FBK. Fresh baked goods will be distributed the same day, while dry groceries such as rice, cereals, and lentils will reach verified charities within four days — all in adherence to strict food safety standards.
The initiative aligns with Majid Al Futtaim’s broader sustainability agenda, focusing on enriching lives, building inclusive communities, and driving positive environmental impact.
“This partnership underscores our commitment to responsible retail and creating a positive impact in the communities we serve,” said Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa, Majid Al Futtaim Retail. “By transforming surplus into support, we are reducing waste while strengthening Kenya’s food security.”
Food Banking Kenya, a member of the Global Food Banking Network, will oversee the collection, sorting, and redistribution of food to accredited charitable organizations.
“Partnering with Carrefour in Kenya expands our reach to ensure safe, nutritious food reaches the most vulnerable communities,” said John Gathungu, Executive Director of Food Banking Kenya. “This collaboration proves that surplus can nourish rather than go to waste.”
The initiative is projected to redistribute about 20 tonnes of food annually, benefiting thousands of households struggling with food insecurity across the country.
Majid Al Futtaim Retail sources 99 percent of its products locally and operates over 390 Carrefour stores across 12 markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
