Former Gor Mahia and Harambee stars player Wesley Onguso single-handedly fighting covid 19 In Kawangware Slums

Former Gor Mahia and international soccer star now plying his trade at City stars is a player worthy emulating.

When Covid 19 pandemic struck, all soccer activities grounded. Many footballers were rendered jobless with most of them turning to drugs to kill their boredom.

One guy was determined to bring a difference amid the confusion. His name isvWesley Onguso the currerent city stars player.

We caught up with Onguso at his base in Kawangware’s Muslim area where he narrated to us his story.
“Yes soccer is my life but we all know you cannot be a soccer player forever. Currently covid 19 has halted our trade which is so hard for most players. To make the matter even more harder, covid 19 is here.

I personally took an initiative to sensitize my people here in the slums to keep safe as we fight covid 19. Luckily Shofco an NGO was doing alot in creating awareness and it was natural for me to join them” Onguso said.

“My day starts by coming to the Shofco offices, collect sanitizers, and soaps for distribution to field officers. This I do for free as part of my way of giving back to the community. I owe alot to these people, Iam who Iam because of the support they have accorded me by supporting me in my career as a soccer star” Onguso adds.

Some people want to urgue that it is poverty that has forced a celebrated soccer star of Onguso’s calibre into bodaboda business but he is quick to say.

“I have several mortorbikes which I bought from the salary I saved from my soccer business. I love bikes and besides I have employed several youth who eke a living out of it. Iam also into matatu business. I want to challenge fellow players to diversify and atleast have a business that they can fall back to when their legs become too heavy to kick a ball” added Onguso.

The chairman of SHOFCO Dagoretti area that covers Dagoretti North and South constituencies Mr James Toya was full of praise for Onguso.
“As Shofco (shining hope for community) community, we are so proud of Onguso. Despite his class as a celebrated soccer star, he is humble enough to come and carry boxes in our offices, distribute sanitizers, soap and water on his mortor bike free of charge all in the effort of helping our community combat covid 19. When the government announced Kawangware as a hot spot, Onguso approached us showing his willingness to help combat covid 19. We are so proud of him and now that his team City stars has been promoted to Kpl, we shall all be going to cheer him as he play” Toya said.
