From Track to Pitch: Kenya Hosts Its First-Ever FIFA Global Event

Story by Archeadious
Kenya is set to make history after being selected to host the 2026 FIFA Women’s Series matches, marking the country’s first time welcoming a global FIFA event. The announcement has been received with pride, signaling growing international confidence in Kenya’s ability to stage world-class sporting competitions.

The Government has extended a warm welcome to participating nations India, Australia, and Malawi, alongside officials and fans from across the globe. The matches, scheduled for April 11 and 15, 2026, at Nyayo National Stadium, are expected to showcase not only top-tier football but also Kenya’s rich culture, diversity, and hospitality.

This milestone builds on Kenya’s strong track record in hosting major sporting events. From the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series to the Magical Kenya Open and the WRC Safari Rally, the country has consistently demonstrated its capacity to deliver successful international tournaments.
Beyond the excitement of the matches, the tournament offers a vital platform to promote women’s football and nurture emerging talent. Ongoing investments in sports academies, talent development pathways, and grassroots programs are ensuring that young athletes have opportunities to grow and compete at elite levels.
The Government has also strengthened partnerships with the private sector and enhanced governance through reforms such as the Sports Bill 2026 and improved stadium management frameworks.
These efforts aim to attract investment, boost accountability, and position sports as a driver of economic growth.
Importantly, hosting the FIFA Women’s Series serves as a key preparatory step for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
As the Harambee Starlets prepare to compete on home soil, Kenyans are being called upon to unite in support, showcasing the nation’s passion and pride for football.
