Chief officer for disaster Bramwel Simiyu conducts meeting on disasater prevention and management in Nairobi.

Nairobi county Chief officer for Disaster Hon Bramwel Simiyu yesterday presided over the first general staff meeting for the fire and disaster management department in over 15 years, to have a candid talk on how to serve Nairobians better.

The Chief officer thanked the fire fighters for their selfless and heroic acts as they fight fires across the  city. He commended tbem for their professionalism and their swift responses to emergencies which has saved lots of lives and property.

Simiyu challenged  the fire fighters and disaster management team to always use his easy formular when faced with situations that require their attention.

“Those who know me well or those who have interacted with me in the line of duty know this simple formular which is necessary in  our trade. FRS+DRR=PMRR where FRS-Fire Rescue Services
+Disaster Risk Reduction =(PMRR)-Prevention Mitigation Response Recovery. We all know that prevention is better than cure hence the PPRR approach” said Simiyu
.

While acknowledging the staffs dedication and sacrifices, Mr Simiyu assured the team of Governor Sakaja’s readiness, and willingness to ensure their welfare and general working condition is looked into.

I want to personally thank you all for the efforts, dedication and sacrifice you are displaying while at work.This is the most thankless job but you always manage to wake up everyday ready to serve  Nairobians be it where buildings have collapsed, accidents, floods and fires that occur always.Governor Sakaja has personally  sent me to convey his gratitude towards the great work you are doing and has promised to ensure your welfare is looked into for efficient service delivery to wananchi” added Mr Simiyu.

Governor Sakaja has put deliberate measures in place to help prevent and or manage fires in the city. He set aside 120 Million to help manage fire which is so far bearing fruits.

According to disaster and emergency management chief officer Bram Simiyu ,Nairobi has modern and  operational fire engines that are upto the task of putting out fires.

Fire engines are distributed in all the stations in all the boroughs in Nairobi. However, it depends on the availability of firefighters and the type of engines required for outpost stations and the emergency work involved,” Simuyu added.

With the availability of modern fire fighting equipment and a motivated staff, Mr Simiyu believes Nairobi is on the right trajectory in combating and preventing disasters.
