AFC Leopards Stall Gor Mahia’s Title Charge in Heated 97th Derby

June 2nd Homabay-Kenya.

Gor Mahia’s title ambitions were dealt a serious blow after a determined AFC Leopards side held them to a dramatic 1-1 draw in the fiercely contested 97th edition of the Mashemeji Derby, played at a packed Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.

AFC Leopards, coached by Fred Ambani—a former player who proudly boasts an unbeaten record against Gor Mahia—had made their intentions clear heading into the clash.

It is unfathomable for me to imagine losing to Gor Mahia,” Ambani declared before the match. “I am taking my boys to Homa Bay for a fight. If Gor Mahia are looking for three points, they’ll have to find them elsewhere—not here.”

True to his word, Ambani’s charges fought tooth and nail to deny the league leaders a crucial win.

The home side struck first, sending their fans into a frenzy when Kayce Odhiambo found the back of the net, giving Gor Mahia a vital early lead. But AFC Leopards responded with grit and composure. Brian Wanyama (often misspelled as Wantam), who has grown into one of the standout performers for the Leopards this season, leveled the score, silencing the home crowd and reigniting the visitors’ fighting spirit.

The draw leaves Gor Mahia’s grip on the title under threat, with pressure mounting in the final stretch of the season. AFC Leopards, meanwhile, will take pride in not only denting their arch-rivals’ title hopes but also in preserving Fred Ambani’s impressive unbeaten streak against K’Ogalo.

As the dust settles on yet another historic derby, one thing is clear—titles may be won with consistency, but bragging rights are earned in the fire of rivalry.
