Siaya county dances to the reggae tune as they approve BBI bill.

The County Assembly of Siaya becomes the first to pass the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitutional Amendment Bill.

The members of the county assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) led residents in public hearings on Tuesday. The draft Bill has already been subjected to public participation in all the six sub-counties that constitute the Siaya county.

Two weeks ago, the Assembly had adverts in local dailies inviting residents to public participation forums where locals views on the bill were sought.

Meetings in Gem, Bondo, and Ugunja sub-counties were held between 2 pm and 5 pm while those in Rarieda, Alego Usonga, and Ugenya sub-counties were held between 9 am and 12.

SIAYA COUNTY ASSEMBLY PASSES BBI: Siaya is the first County Assembly to pass the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill. The Bill will need the support of at least 24 out of the 47 county assemblies for the country to hold a BBI referendum

Counties have approximately 90 days to debate and approve the Bill.

The passage of the bill in Siaya comes hot on the heels of Odm Party leader Hon Raila Odinga meeting the party Mcas where he urged them to ensure a smooth sailing of the bill in readiness for a referundum.
