Floods hit Kakamega county causing untold suffering in Lugari, Mumias and Matungu

The floods from rivers Nzoia, Yala and Kipkaren have hit Mumias West, Matungu and Khwisero subcounties in the past week. 

Over 100 families have been displaced in Mautuma, Chekalini, Lugari Lwandeti and Chevaywa wards of Lugari constituency according to area leader Hon Savula.

Lugari MP Ayub Savula visited the families and donated cash and food.

He urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare floods a national disaster because many Kenyans have been displaced, lost lives and property. 

“I will discuss with the county and national governments to provide emergency support to those affected,” Savula said

Down River Nzoia in Mumias /Matungu areas, over 300 families have been displaced.

According to a local leader Hon Hadija Nganyi, the situation is dire and calls for concerted efforts to a vert a looming humanitariam crisis.

“My body was aching all over , my Heart pained more but how could I even sleep after witnessing the pain our people are going through? I therefore paid a visit to victims of river Nzoia floods where they are putting up in 7 camps the pain I saw on the women and children face was so devastating. As a woman I put together a few resources and managed to buy some foodstuffs for the displaced families” She said.
As I interracted with the displaced families I came to realize that the situation is dire, our people are exposed to water borne diseases, malaria, cold (since most of their beddings were swept away) not to mention the looming covid 19 pandemic. Our people are really suffering I can’t find the right words to describe the situation” said Hadija as she struggled to hold back tears.
“To a vert a humanitarian crisis I humbly request well wishers to join me as we salvage the situation in Mumias, schools will be opening soon and many school going kids may not be able to resume studies as a result.” Hadija adds.

Over 256 families benefitted from her food donation initiative in the following camps.

  4. Matawa primary
  5. Ebutobe primary
  6. Nyapete primary
  7. Wangnyang primary
    She urges the government to clear river Nzoia pathway so as to ease the flow of water as well as build dykes along the river banks to reduce water spill over and protect families living near the river
