George Aladwa: ODM’s Unyielding Mobilizer and a Reliable Force in Nairobi’s 2027 Political Equation.

Many know him as “His Worship,” others simply call him Mayor, while those within his inner circle refer to him as George or Baba Jaso. But beyond the titles lies a seasoned political operator—George Aladwa—a man increasingly seen as pivotal in shaping Nairobi’s political direction ahead of 2027.

Mayor George Aladwa. The last Mayor of Nairobi.

Born and raised in Makadara over five decades ago to a railway worker, Aladwa’s journey is deeply rooted in the everyday struggles of Nairobi’s working class. His early life, including his time at Joseph Opudo Primary School, molded him into a tough, resilient, and street-smart leader—traits that would later define his political career.

Before politics, Aladwa was a footballer at Makongeni Youth FC, known for his fearless and uncompromising style of play. That same grit would later characterize his political approach. He first ventured into politics as a councillor on a KANU ticket. Though unsuccessful in his initial bid, his boldness caught the attention of then President Daniel Arap Moi, who brought him into the influential KANU political machinery in Nairobi.

Under Moi’s mentorship, Aladwa sharpened his political instincts, rising through the ranks to become a key figure in city politics—eventually serving as the last Mayor of Nairobi and later as Makongeni Ward representative.

From KANU to ODM: Mastering Political Transitions

Aladwa’s strength has always been his ability to read the political tide. As KANU’s influence waned in 2002, he seamlessly aligned himself with the LDP/NARC wave that swept Kenya. This adaptability ensured his continued relevance in an ever-shifting political landscape.
His stature grew steadily, and his imposing presence and blunt political style earned him a seat at Nairobi’s high tables of power.
Raila’s Loyal General in Nairobi
Following the exit of veteran politician Fred Gumo, Aladwa emerged as the undisputed Luhya political voice in Nairobi. As a close ally of Raila Odinga, he became a frontline defender during some of the most turbulent moments in Kenya’s political history.

From street protests to high-stakes political mobilization, Aladwa stood firmly by Raila’s side. Raila, in turn, held him in high regard—often referring to him as “Omwami,” a title of deep respect among the Luhya community.
His loyalty during the agitation years, including the famed “Teargas Tuesdays and Thursdays,” cemented his reputation as a fearless mobilizer—earning him both admiration and political capital across Nairobi.

Navigating the New Political Order

With the evolving political dynamics and the broad-based cooperation framework that has seen William Ruto and Raila Odinga find common ground, Aladwa has once again demonstrated his political agility.

In a shifting landscape where traditional rivalries are giving way to strategic alliances, Aladwa has positioned himself as a key bridge between ODM’s grassroots machinery and the broader national political formation.
Reflecting on his long-time association with Raila, Aladwa once noted:

Raila’s loyal defender

If there is one thing that shook me deeply, it was the loss of my friend, mentor and leader Raila Odinga. I am yet to come to terms with it, but as his foot soldier in Nairobi, I will keep his dream alive by continuing to fight for the people.”

The Nairobi Arithmetic and 2027 Calculus

As ODM Nairobi County chairman, Aladwa commands significant influence at the grassroots level—particularly in populous areas such as Makadara, Embakasi, and parts of Eastlands. His mobilization capacity, coupled with his deep understanding of Nairobi’s political terrain, makes him an indispensable figure in any serious presidential campaign targeting the capital.

A seasoned mobilizer, strategist, and negotiator, Aladwa brings with him not just political experience but also a loyal support base that listens when he speaks. His ability to rally ODM supporters within a broader coalition framework could significantly tilt Nairobi’s electoral balance.

Eyes on City Hall?

Beyond his national relevance, Aladwa is also rumored to be eyeing the Nairobi gubernatorial seat. Should he enter the race, his political weight, name recognition, and grassroots networks would make him a formidable contender in the battle for City Hall.

A Man to Watch

In the complex chessboard of Nairobi politics, where alliances shift and influence is everything, George Aladwa stands out as a battle-hardened operator whose relevance continues to grow.
As the road to 2027 takes shape, one thing is increasingly clear: in Nairobi’s political arithmetic, Aladwa remains a dependable, influential force whose role could prove decisive.
