Whats the meaning of Handshake in Kenya’s political history?
Handshake is a phenomenon that occurs in Multiparty Kenya every time an incumbent President enters his final term. It manifests itself by one Raila Odinga moving to work with the exiting President with a view to succeeding him.
It started after 1997 elections through the NDP-KANU merger as Moi entered his final term.
As Kibaki entered his final term after 2007 General Elections it reinvented itself through the Grand Coalition Government and the 2010 Referendum. It entered its third decade as Uhuru Kenyatta entered his final term after the 2017 General Elections this time through the March 9, 2018 handshake and the BBI.
Statisticians and Meteorologists predict that the next Handshake will occur around 2028 when Raila Odinga will enter into a pact with William Ruto who will be on his last term as Raila prepares for his 5th Presidential bid in 2032
