The People’s Choice: As Voter Registration Gains Momentum, Gatina Rallies Behind Hon. Mwalimu Kennedy Swaka

As the 2027 election season steadily approaches, the political atmosphere in Gatina Ward is taking clearer shape. Across biashara centres, churches, youth forums and community meetings, one name continue to dominate local discourse , Hon. Mwalimu Kennedy Swaka, widely regarded by residents as the people’s choice.

Since his election to the Nairobi County Assembly, Swaka has cultivated a reputation as a hands-on, service-delivery focused leader whose style blends grassroots engagement with firm legislative oversight. His transition from educator to legislator has not diluted his identity as “Mwalimu” instead, it has sharpened his focus on practical solutions and community empowerment.

Delivering Beyond Debate

Within the Assembly, Swaka has consistently utilized formal mechanisms — statements and motions — to address pressing ward concerns. His recent push for urgent intervention at Gatina Health Centre brought renewed attention to persistent storm water flooding that had threatened operations. By lobbying for improved drainage and a perimeter wall, he reinforced his commitment to safeguarding essential public services.

As a member of the Select Committee on Implementation, Swaka plays a critical watchdog role, ensuring that resolutions passed by the Assembly translate into tangible development on the ground.

Roads That Tell a Story

Infrastructure development stands out as one of his most visible achievements. Salim Road — neglected for over a decade — is now nearing completion following sustained lobbying efforts. Key feeder roads including Kibue, Amboseli, Facebook, and Checkpoint 56 have been upgraded to bitumen standards, significantly improving accessibility, enhancing security, and unlocking economic activity in Kongo and Kamitha areas.

Local sentiment reflects appreciation for these changes.

For the first time, we see projects completed, not just promised. Swaka follows up until work is done,” says a community opinion leader in Kongo.

These roads have changed our business. Customers can now access us easily and security has improved at night,” notes a trader near Checkpoint 56.

Investing in People

True to his professional roots, Swaka has prioritized education and social welfare. His bursary program is widely praised as transparent and inclusive, benefiting students without discrimination.

The bursary process is clean. You don’t need to know anyone to benefit. That alone tells you the kind of leader he is,” says a parent from Gatina.

Beyond bursaries, over 80 youths have acquired employable driving skills through his sponsored initiative, while more than 300 small-scale traders (Mama Mbogas) recently benefited from an empowerment program that provided business equipment and improved street lighting to extend trading hours.
A youth beneficiary shares:

He didn’t just talk about empowering youth — he gave us real skills. Now we can earn with dignity.”

Mobilizing Youth as Registration Drive Intensifies

As the mass voter registration exercise takes shape across the country, Hon. Swaka has intensified grassroots mobilization, particularly targeting young people who are eligible but yet to register.
Over the weekend, he commissioned a team to move across villages and estates encouraging residents to enlist as voters, emphasizing civic participation as both a right and responsibility.

“I wish to encourage our young people to be part of this process and register as voters. This is a right that we must practice boldly,” said Swaka as he flagged off the registration sensitization drive.

Observers note that his involvement in voter awareness aligns with his broader philosophy of civic education and empowerment — ensuring that development and democracy move hand in hand.
Looking Ahead to 2027
With visible infrastructure improvements, strengthened social programs, and active civic mobilization, political analysts suggest that Swaka’s campaign narrative may rest less on promises and more on performance.

In the words of one ward elder:
“Leadership is about results. In Gatina, the results are visible.

As 2027 looms, Gatina Ward appears to be weighing continuity against change. For many residents, the decision may ultimately hinge on one question who has delivered?

On the ground, the answer seems increasingly clear.
