RESPITE NEEDED FOR TENANTS~Babu Owino

This is a special appeal to H. E President Uhuru Kenyatta following his fourth address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic. We are in the second week of the partial lockdown and curfew and Kenyans are suffering.

Majority of my consitituents in Embakasi East live hand to mouth. These are people who work blue collar, informal jobs such as electricians, matatu drivers, salonists, tailors and so on. Such workers rely on their daily earnings to feed their families and meet their obligations.

I make this appeal to plead with the President to issue a directive on the issue of house rents. A special waiver needs to be given to landlords on their tax returns to allow them be lenient with tenants during this difficult time. People cannot afford to pay because they are not earning. I also appeal to the good conscience of landlords to be accommodating to their tenants, if you evict them today, where do you think you will find another tenant at a time like this? Let us all be understanding as we fight this wretched disease together!

Comrade Babu Owino,
MP, Embakasi East.
