Kinyago Playground Officially Launched in California Ward

NAIROBI, February 17, 2026

Tecno Mobile Kenya, in partnership with the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG), has officially launched the Kinyago Playground in Biafra, California Ward marking a major milestone in community sports development within Nairobi’s informal settlements.

The colourful ceremony was graced by the Area MCA, Hon. Hashim Kamau, and drew enthusiastic residents who finally gained access to a modern football facility after nearly three decades without a proper playing field. The new seven-a-side football pitch, delivered as part of Tecno’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, is designed to nurture grassroots talent and expand access to quality sports infrastructure.

Hon. Kamau praised the community for embracing the project, noting that such initiatives often face resistance in informal settlements.

“This facility is a product of cooperation and trust between the community and stakeholders. I appreciate residents for welcoming development and setting an example for other areas,” he said.

The pitch is part of Tecno Mobile Kenya’s preparations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the brand is an official sponsor. The tournament—set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania—is expected to attract large numbers of visitors and athletes, underscoring the need for modern training and match venues across the region.

Speaking during the launch, the Chief Officer for Youth, Talent and Sports, Hon Oscar Igaida, applauded Tecno Mobile Kenya for its continued partnership with the county.

Hon Igaida.
“We commend Tecno Mobile Kenya for a job well done and for sustaining a partnership that directly benefits our youth,” said Igaida.

“Our collaboration focuses on identifying key community playgrounds that have historically produced football talent and continue to attract large numbers of young athletes within informal settlements.”

He added that once fully operational, the facilities would have a lasting impact.

“These projects will greatly benefit the youth and the community at large, while helping the county deliver on Governor Sakaja’s manifesto of talent nurturing and sports development,” he said.

Leading the Tecno delegation, Victor Alufwani linked the launch to the upcoming unveiling of a new Camon series smartphone.

Just as our new Camon series offers a powerful zoom feature that allows users to capture clear images, this facility gives young people a clear path to focus on and achieve their dreams in the right environment,” he said.

Also present were Area Chief Madam Agnes; Director of Sports Ms. Linet Boyani; Deputy Director of Sports Mr. Hari Mwahari; Principal Sports Officers Willis Okombo and Elvira Lwanga; and Sports Officers Pascaline Musau, Alex Mwangi, Vane Mboga, Eunice Auma, Caroline Achieng’ and Richard Magondu.

Following the launch, officials conducted a routine inspection of ongoing works at Kamukunji Grounds, where construction is progressing at pace and completion is scheduled for April 2026. The project forms part of the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, a transformative initiative aimed at restoring the Nairobi River while creating modern recreational and sporting facilities for city residents.
