Mentoring future leaders.

“As a mother and a teacher it pains me when I see many of our young boys and girls become social deviants. Our county Vihiga has registered high numbers of teenage pregnancies. The situation has been made worse by this covid 19 pandemic which has forced our children to stay away from schools. As we all know, an idle mind is the devils workshop. This is what has forced me to take a personal initiative to engage our young kids by mentoring them” Mwalimu Kevina said as  she toured Luanda subcounty mentoring  young girls as she donated sanitary towels.

Over 2000 girls earmarked to benefitt from Mwalimu Kevina’s mentorship programme and received sanitary pads.

“We need to  pull together and help our young people. Today while interracting  with the young girls at Ibona area, it broke my heart to learn that our young girls at times fall prey to sexual male preditors just for the sake of getting small money for their sanitary pads.
As a mother and a professional under my mentorship programme, I have promised to walk with the young girls and ensure they have sanitary towels, keep off early  sex and by so doing we shall be safeguarding our future and ensuring the dignity of the girl child is upheld”  she said.

Over 2000 beneficiaries drawn from Wekhono ,Ebuhando,Ebusundi and Ibona locations were given  a pack of 10units each. (Pads)

“We are so happy that Mwalimu Kevina has thought of us. We have been sidelined and at times we lack people to confide in on some issues. We are grateful for the pads and advice and we promise not to let her down” said a beneficiary.

Young girls who are not in the menstrual bracket  were not left alone either Mwalimu Kevina gave them sweets and a word  of advice on their studies.

“In my efforts to bond and mentor the girls, I also gave them lollipop. This was a symbolic gesture that if they focus on studies and excel, they will be able to afford a lollipop and they dont have to exchange their bodies for a mere lollipop. This message was driven home well as the girls shed tears of joy upon realising that their bodies and future is worthy much more than the lollipop.

This mentorship programme is a personal initiative by Madam Kevina. She is glad that young mentors from Maseno university college were at hand to help in practically emphasizing on importance of education and keeping off early sexual escapedes
