“Serving My People with Humility and Utmost Dedication Warms My Heart” – Hon. Kennedy Swaka

2nd June ~Nairobi.
When Mwalimu Kennedy Swaka entered politics as the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Gatina Ward in Nairobi County, few anticipated the impact he would make. Now, three years into his first term, the former teacher and community advocate is steadily proving his critics wrong by delivering meaningful change at the grassroots level.

Raised in Kawangware, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, Swaka’s leadership is deeply rooted in lived experience. His approach to governance is informed less by abstract policy and more by the realities he grew up with.
“My leadership is grounded in the realities I know firsthand,” he explains. “I understand what it means to struggle, and that drives me to fight for the wellbeing of my community.”
For him, representing Gatina is a matter of shared struggle and collective progress rather than personal ambition.
From Educator to Elected Leader
Before politics, Swaka earned recognition in business and education. Known for going beyond the classroom, he founded an education centre that offered opportunities to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

He reflects, “Education is the greatest equalizer. Seeing children from humble beginnings succeed through learning inspires everything I do.”
In 2022, driven to broaden his impact, he ran under the ODM ticket and overcame fierce competition to secure both the nomination and the MCA seat—signaling a shift in Gatina’s political landscape.
Prioritizing Development, One Road at a Time
Since taking office, Swaka has focused on infrastructure, healthcare, youth and women’s empowerment, and community welfare. His most visible achievement is the near-completion of Salim Road—a once-neglected artery now dramatically improving mobility and economic activity.

He notes, “Salim Road was more than just a stretch of dirt—it was a symbol of neglect. Its transformation has opened doors for residents and boosted our local economy.”

Other key roads, including Amboseli, Facebook, and Checkpoint 56, have also benefited from upgrades, easing access across the ward.
Healthcare as a Right
Swaka has worked to revitalize Gatina Dispensary, lobbying for better medical supplies and staff to ensure reliable healthcare delivery.

“A health centre without medicine or personnel is a hollow promise. Access to healthcare must be guaranteed for every resident,” he asserts.
Empowering Women and Youth
Recognizing their vital role in community progress, Swaka has championed programs targeting youth and women. A driving school initiative equips young people with employable skills, while small loans enable women entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and support their families.

He says, “Women run our homes, and youth carry our future. Investing in them is investing in the entire community’s prosperity.”
Support in Times of Loss
In Gatina, where funeral costs can be crippling, Swaka has been a steadfast supporter—helping families secure waivers, organizing fundraising, and providing moral support during their darkest hours.
“When a family calls me in their hour of grief, I consider it a sacred responsibility to stand with them. Leadership is about presence, not just policy.”
Focused on the Mandate Ahead
With the 2027 elections approaching, speculation about his political future is inevitable. Yet Swaka remains grounded.
“My commitment is to the people of Gatina, not to political ambition. I have a mandate, and I intend to fulfill it with all my heart.”
