Uncertainty looms in Kenya’s oldest club AFC Leopards as no credible candidate for the club president has stepped up as the outgoing office exits the stage in June 2025. And that calls for the formation of a care taker committee.

Only jokers with no credentials to run such a club have shown interest. That demonstrates how low the bar in the club has been lowered as members seem to be preoccupied with banter and trivialities.

None seems to have a plan on how to bridge the annual budget deficit of about Kshs 60 million and to offset the club debt of Kshs 130 million.

The lack of interest by serious contenders can be attributed to an unprogressive structure of governance that the club seems to be stuck in despite efforts to transform to an investor friendly corporate entity. A punitive clause in the archaic club constitution has also locked out potential able leaders from ascending to office unless they have been paid up members for three consecutive years.

A recent Task Force report that recommended the transformation from the porous society to an investor friendly corporate entity was deferred to an unspecified period after goons hired by the anti corporate below par candidates bangled the AGM Corporate agenda tabling in fear of it’s ratification.

As the club enters into a cheap election mood, our competitors are implementing our blueprint verbatim with the latest acquisition of property to develop training grounds and stadium hitting the headlines. They are also working on going corporate by end of the year.

Sadly, non of the below par contenders has talked favorably about the corporate agenda with eyes trained on patronizing the club politically and for self interest. Matters are not made any better by the aloofness of the grassroot leaders who do not want to put their money where their mouths are.
