The day before today, the president of the Republic of Kenya shocked the nation as he said that he will not hand power to a thief. His statement has caused shock both within and without the political circles. Many people are yet to know the weight the president’s statement carries.

Kenya’s were seen in the corners of Nairobi conversing in a high and low tone as to who is the thief that Uhuru will not hand power to. Some were suggesting that if the President really knows who the thief is, how come he has not instructed instruments of authority at his disposal to arrest the thief. Why would the president allow the thief to roam amidst peaceful Kenyans without having him arrested and charged in court?

If the president is playing politics with such a mighty matter, then his statement is detrimental to the future of this nation. In developed nations or in mature democracies, if the president said such a matter publicly then questions of integrity will hit the ruling government furiously. What information does the president have that informs his public or roadside outburst?

Is it enough for the president to say that he will not hand power to a thief or the president being the commander in chief of the armed forces and all entire intelligence tools ought to act or take action. How does the roadside declaration help in solving the plight of the suffering folks?

Truth be told, the president should name the thief, he should ask the arresting officers to do their job without him wasting Kenyan’s time by just making roadside declarations for political convenience. This is what Kenyans expect of the government that cares and listens, a government that places all as equal before the law.
