Teacher, Author, politician and a mother all in one, Madam Kevina Oriedo’s journey as she eyes Vihiga county Woman Rep seat in 2022

Madam Kevina Oriedor or simply Mwalimu as many people prefer calling her is a career teacher, author , politician, church leader and a mother all rolled up in one.
Mwalimu Spoke to www.goodmorning Kenya on her journey to where she has reached but warned that the journey is still on.

Mwalimu was born in a little known village of Shikumu in current Idakho South.
Born of career teachers Mr and Mrs Festus Shikutwa who later plunged into politics.

“Yes I was born and raised up by teachers in the tiny village of Shikumu near Eregi TTC. Both  mum and dad were career teachers and my siblings and I carried the title Mtoto wa mwalimu. I think it was therefore natural for me to become a teacher and here I am Mwalimu Kevina” she narrates with a smile.

# Bunyore girls alumni
“After my primary school exams, I was blessed to join the prestigious Bunyore girls high school. Born and raised by teachers (mom and dad) hard work, discipline and organizational traits were imparted on me at an early age. Sitting my final exams in high school, I already  knew I was destined for classroom” she added.

# Family and parenting.

Upon completion of her TTC studies as a teacher, Mwalimu Kevina just like all young ladies, was blessed to meet her love Mr Joseph Oriedo from  Emabungo Ward Ibona area of Luanda sub county with whom they are happily married and raising their family.

“I think I fell in love with Bunyore during my highschool days at Bunyore girls hence my choosing to marry here. However Iam married in a family that do not actively engage in politics but I believe nobody can stop what God has put forth. They too are very suppotive” adds Mwalimu Kevina.

“Teaching for me was and still is a very noble duty. Besides the satisfaction I derive seeing those I have tought blossom into respected persons in our community, I always go an extra mile in ensuring the young boys and girls parents entrust under our care are well equiped for a better future” notes Mwalimu Kevina.

Madam Kevina has participated in several local and international education programmes that have made her best equiped in dispensing her duties as a teacher.

As an author with Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB), Mwalimu Kevina has positively engaged in  authoring several books that suit the ever changing educational environment. She is blessed to have been at  the helm of a school that has been a center of excellence when it comes to national exams.

# Aspirations and drive.

The above verse greets  you as you enter Mwalimu’s office.

Having been brought up by a strictly religious family  Madam Kevina draws her stength in the Lord by reading the bible always.

“My grandpa was the first African  Catholic catechist in Erusui and Eregi parish. I believe he is the one who laid the strong Christian foundation in our family something we still hold on dearly” said Mwalimu Kevina.

# Road to Politics.
“My grand father retired having served as a catechist from Erusui and Eregi parishes ran for a ward seat and won. His son ‘my dad resigned a few years to his retirement  age as a teacher, ran for a ward seat in Eregi on Kanu ticket and won. He went on to represent the area for two terms.
“Nothing comes from nothing” continues Mwalimu Kevina, “I developed the interest and thirst to serve after having actively participated in my father’s campaign activities drumming up support for him and the then president Mzee Moi.

# Genuine, Collective leadership approach for all.

“The quality of our women and  youths is a direct reflection of our leaders”  Mwalimu Kevina.

Having served as a teacher all over the country and currently in Nairobi, Madam Kevina has mentored several young teachers besides helping many get teaching jobs using her vast networks in the education circles.
Mwalimu Kevina believes true leadership is only achieved when lives have been transformed for the best.

As we come to the conclusion, Mwalimu Kevina ends it with a quote from her favourite author Nora Ephron.

“Whatever you choose, however many roads you travel, I hope that you choose not to be a lady. I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And I also hope that you will choose to make some of that trouble on behalf of women” Nora Ephron.
