Senator Osotsi Sounds Alarm Over Massive Underfunding in Education Sector

By Our Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent team.

Nairobi, Kenya — Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has raised the red flag over what he terms as a dangerous and deepening crisis in the country’s education sector, blaming chronic underfunding for the alarming decline in learning standards across public institutions.

Citing the latest report by the Auditor General, Senator Osotsi revealed that public schools were underfunded by a staggering Sh117 billion over a four-year period — a shortfall he warns could cripple the country’s future workforce.

“At this rate, our education system is on life support — and the facts are deeply alarming,” Osotsi said in a strongly worded statement.

According to the breakdown, secondary schools missed out on Sh71 billion, junior secondary schools Sh31 billion, while primary schools were shortchanged by Sh14 billion.

“These figures expose the depth of a crisis that is stifling institutions designed to empower the next generation,” Osotsi lamented.

The Senator urged both the Ministry of Education and the National Treasury to urgently take responsibility for the funding gaps and roll out an immediate and transparent recovery plan.

“Education is a right, not a privilege. This persistent underfunding is unacceptable and unsustainable,” he added, warning that the country risks “being judged by history for having failed our children.”

Osotsi reaffirmed his commitment to championing accountability and sweeping reforms in the education sector, saying decisive action is the only path forward.
