Immediate former Cecafa General Secretary Nicholas Musonye has announced intentions to challenge for Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidency
Nick as he is popularly known in soccer circles had announced his retirement from active soccer management and wanted to throw his heart in the ring and replace Kakamega governor Hon Oparanya.
Speaking to Goodmorning Kenya at his private office in Nairobi, Musonye said that as a soccer lover it pained his heart to see standards of soccer deteriorate hence his change of mind when stakeholders approached him.
“My intentions after retiring from Cecafa was to stay away from football but when stakeholders come looking for you even at your house, then it means something is wrong somewhere and needs to be fixed, we will discuss this, don’t worry, when the time [for elections] comes, I will declare my stand,” Musonye told Goodmorning Kenya.
The former journalist served Cecafa for twenty years. Under his tenure soccer activities increased with regional players flying to go play in lucrative leagues.
Before his candidature, the battle was between Nyamweya and incumbent Mwendwa. Musonye gives delegates another option.
So far seven Kpl clubs have thrown their weight behind Musonye.
Former Ingwe player and coach Bonface Ambani has received news of Musonye’s candidature with ululations.
“Many soccer lovers have been pushing me to vie for this top seat. People were wondering how to select between Mwendwa and Nyamweya who have served at one point with Mwendwa serving under Sam. I hope delegates will take advantage of Musonye’s wealth of experience and elect him” Ambani said.
