Stop feeding your donkeys on marijuana-Moyale residents told.

Moyale residents have been urged to shun feeding their donkeys marijuana in a bid to increase their performance.

A donkey welfare group in the region revealed that some residents have resorted to feeding bhang to the beasts of burden, for them to work even harder and for long hours.

During a vaccination campaign for the donkeys in the area, the donkey welfare team said the residents mix the bhang with donkey food.

“They mix the bhang with food and the donkey overworks without knowing it has consumed marijuana. We condemn this,” the welfare leader said

He further claimed that some donkeys in the region are used to transport diesel, which is harmful to their health as it sometimes burns them.

“Some are transporting diesel from Ethiopia using the donkeys. That is animal abuse. Sadly, we only speak but there is no action taken to protect the welfare of the donkeys,” he added.

The welfare called for stiff action against whoever is found feeding donkeys bhang, saying such people should be prosecuted for violating the rights of animals.

The donkey population in Kenya has declined significantly, and there have been concerns that the animal will become extinct if nothing is done.

Currently, there are estimated to be around 1.15 million donkeys in Kenya
