He is accused of  financing the 1994 genocide which left about one million people dead. At one time it was alleged he was hiding in Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French Justice Ministry said Kabuga was living under a false identity in a flat in Asnieres-Sur-Seine, near Paris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabuga is accused of creating the notorious Interahamwe militia that carried out massacres in the 1994 genocide.He  also helped create the equally notorious Radio-Television Libre des  Mille Collines that incited people to carry out murder in its  broadcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Felicien Kabuga is known to have been the  financier of the Rwandan genocide,&#8221; it said, adding that he had spent  time in Germany, Belgium, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and  Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French gendarmes arrested him at 0530 GMT on Saturday, the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabuga\u2019s arrest has been hailed by the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, which said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irmct.org\/en\/news\/20-05-16-mechanism-fugitive-f%C3%A9licien-kabuga-arrested-today\">a statement<\/a>\n attributed to Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz that the apprehension \nserved as \u201ca reminder that those responsible for genocide can be brought\n to account, even twenty-six years after their crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor international justice, Kabuga\u2019s arrest demonstrates that we can \nsucceed when we have the international community\u2019s support. This result \nis a tribute to the unwavering commitment of the United Nations Security\n Council, which established the Mechanism to continue the accountability\n process in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia,\u201d Brammertz added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabuga was indicted by the United Nations International Criminal \nTribunal for Rwanda in 1997 on seven counts of genocide, complicity in \ngenocide, direct and public incitement to commit genocide, attempt to \ncommit genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, persecution and \nextermination, all in relation to crimes committed during the 1994 \ngenocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabuga is expected to stand trial in the coming days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda genocide suspect Felicien Kabuga was arrested on Saturday in the Paris region, according to the French Justice Ministry.
