Small-scale traders in Gatina Ward were all smiles on Wednesday after their area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Hon. Mwalimu Kennedy Swaka, rolled out an empowerment programme that saw more than 300 traders receive large garden umbrellas to shield them from harsh weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many traders who operate in open-air stalls and roadside markets, the pounding rains and scorching sun have long posed serious challenges to their daily businesses. The umbrellas are expected to provide much-needed protection, enabling traders to continue operating regardless of weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True to his campaign manifesto, where he pledged to empower small-scale businesses within the ward, Hon. Swaka said the initiative is part of a broader programme aimed at uplifting grassroots entrepreneurs and improving livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The large garden umbrellas, branded in the orange colours associated with his political outfit, were distributed across different parts of the ward. In addition to offering protection from the elements, the MCA also hinted at further economic support for traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I ran for this seat, I campaigned on the platform of empowerment as opposed to the usual rhetoric of handouts. I am happy that by the grace of God we have managed to help our young people acquire skills in driving schools, catering just to name but a few. Our mama mbogas are now sheltered and those that were in need of financial boost in their businesses have been assisted. We shall keep serving our people as we transform Gatina,\u201d Swaka said amid chants of \u201ctwo terms\u201d from residents.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n


Improving Road Infrastructure<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond economic empowerment, Hon. Swaka highlighted improvements in infrastructure within the ward, particularly the rehabilitation of feeder roads that had previously made movement difficult for residents and traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we assumed office, the feeder roads in Gatina were an eyesore. By having a cordial relationship with our governor Hon. Sakaja and our area MP Hon. Elachi, we have achieved worthy progress and we continue to do so. Kibue Road, which for many years has been causing havoc, is now fully tarmacked and has opened the Kongo\/Kamitha area for business. Those commuting to and from Westlands can now directly connect either from 56 Area or Stage 2, which are now operational,\u201d he added.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n


Focus on Service Delivery Ahead of 2027<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n


With the 2027 elections slowly taking shape and several aspirants already expressing interest in the Gatina MCA seat, Swaka maintains that his focus remains firmly on service delivery.
Observers note that the MCA has built a strong grassroots network within the ward, bolstered by his record on bursary disbursement and community empowerment programmes.
Some residents who spoke to Good Morning Kenya said the development projects implemented so far have strengthened confidence in his leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHon. Swaka has redefined leadership in Gatina. He understands our needs very well. Moving forward into 2027, we still have hope that we shall re-elect him to continue doing what he is doing,\u201d said one voter.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n


Lighting Up Gatina Ward<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n


Another major transformation cited by residents is the installation of street lighting across parts of the ward. The lighting programme has improved security and allowed traders to extend their business hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Local traders say the improved lighting has enabled them to operate more comfortably in the evening while also contributing to safer neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
