What initially seemed like a political joke is rapidly snowballing into a serious power struggle at Nairobi\u2019s City Hall. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is now staring at a possible impeachment after falling out with a section of Nairobi County Assembly Members (MCAs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by Kileleshwa MCA Hon. Robert Alai, the group of disgruntled MCAs claims to have finalized a motion containing over 20 substantive charges against the governor. According to Alai, the motion already enjoys overwhelming support, with over 100 MCAs backing the initiative \u2014 well above the required threshold to table an impeachment motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Monday at the Nairobi County Assembly buildings, Alai stated that the charges are grounded in facts and represent the will of a majority of the elected members. He accused Governor Sakaja of mismanaging city affairs, including failing to release funds to MCAs for local infrastructure projects and being largely absent from both duty and engagement with assembly members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe governor doesn\u2019t pick calls, doesn\u2019t interact with MCAs, and has denied them the capacity to serve their wards. This is no longer about politics. It\u2019s about service delivery,\u201d Alai said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, this marks a sharp U-turn by Alai, who just days ago distanced himself from any plot to impeach Sakaja. In a statement posted on social media, Alai had dismissed the leadership of both the Majority and Minority sides of the assembly as corrupt and unfit to lead any meaningful accountability process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am NOT behind ANY motion to impeach Governor Sakaja. I would first impeach the conmen leading the Majority and Minority side of the assembly. The assembly leadership is too rotten to hold anyone to account,\u201d Alai had previously stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Now, however, the tide seems to have turned. Alai has not only thrown his weight behind the impeachment motion but has emerged as one of its key champions. Sources within the assembly indicate that preparations are underway to formally table the motion in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the momentum continues, Governor Sakaja could be facing a major political crisis \u2014 one that may cost him his seat if the charges proceed to the Senate and are upheld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time of this publication, Governor Sakaja has not publicly responded to the latest developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
