The Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS-2)<\/strong> will be held from September 8\u201310, 2025<\/strong>, at the Addis International Convention Center<\/strong> in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Co-hosted by the Government of Ethiopia<\/strong> and the African Union<\/strong>, this landmark event carries the theme:
“Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa\u2019s Resilient and Green Development.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit is expected to bring together over 45 heads of state<\/strong>, along with policymakers, academics, practitioners, youth, media, financiers, business leaders<\/strong>, and other key stakeholders. Together, they aim to advance Africa\u2019s climate agenda<\/strong>, accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong>, and foster continental and global collaboration<\/strong> on the climate crisis facing Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa\u2019s Climate Challenge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Africa is disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, including rising temperatures, recurrent droughts, floods, and extreme weather patterns. These events have devastated agriculture<\/strong>, increased food insecurity<\/strong>, and led to the displacement of millions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa\u2019s high vulnerability stems from its heavy reliance on agriculture<\/strong>, limited adaptive capacity<\/strong>, and inadequate infrastructure<\/strong>, despite contributing less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>. These climate-induced changes threaten the livelihoods of communities across the continent, making the need for African-led and global solutions more urgent than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Platform for African Solutions and Leadership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

ACS-2 will serve as a strategic platform<\/strong> to amplify Africa\u2019s voice in global climate action<\/strong>, promote African-led climate solutions<\/strong>, and push for bold financial and political commitments<\/strong>. It will also spotlight innovative financing mechanisms<\/strong>, support green growth<\/strong>, and strengthen efforts in climate mitigation and adaptation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit\u2019s agenda will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Showcasing indigenous knowledge and local innovations<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Highlighting youth engagement and community resilience<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Advocating for systemic reforms in global climate finance<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Promoting just partnerships<\/strong> and international cooperation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Importantly, ACS-2 will help establish a unified African position<\/strong> for COP30<\/strong>, ensuring Africa\u2019s priorities and commitments are clearly articulated and advanced on the global stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ethiopia\u2019s Role in Climate Leadership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Ethiopia stands at the forefront of Africa\u2019s climate resilience efforts. The country\u2019s enduring legacy of independence, innovation<\/strong>, and policy leadership<\/strong> makes it a fitting host for this historic summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Notably, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy Initiative (GLI)<\/strong>\u2014a groundbreaking reforestation campaign\u2014has planted over 47.5 billion trees in just seven years<\/strong>. This initiative not only combats climate change but also restores ecosystems and improves livelihoods, exemplifying practical climate action in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In his message regarding ACS-2, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed<\/strong> stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThis landmark gathering offers a vital opportunity to redefine Africa\u2019s aspirations for a climate-resilient and prosperous future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    He emphasized that ACS-2 will spotlight proven Africa-led climate solutions<\/strong> and the continent\u2019s efforts to re-green its landscapes<\/strong>, laying a strong foundation for future climate-resilient development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Building on the Nairobi Declaration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    ACS-2 builds upon the momentum of the Inaugural Africa Climate Summit (2023)<\/strong> held in Nairobi, Kenya, which adopted the Nairobi Declaration<\/strong>. That declaration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Called for acceleration of the AU Climate and Resilient Development Strategy and Action Plan (2022\u20132032)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Advocated for a new global financial architecture<\/strong>, including debt relief<\/strong> and restructuring<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Emphasized leveraging Africa\u2019s natural resources for low-carbon development<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Urged reform of the multilateral financial system<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Institutionalized the Africa Climate Summit as a biennial event<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      The Nairobi Declaration marked a turning point in framing Africa\u2019s common position<\/strong> on climate change and finance. ACS-2 now provides the opportunity to move from words to actions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Financing for Climate Resilience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Climate financing<\/strong> will be a central focus of ACS-2. African countries require substantial investment to realize their climate adaptation and mitigation goals. The summit will explore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          This declaration will set the tone for Africa\u2019s contribution to COP30 and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          As the climate crisis intensifies, the African continent\u2014though least responsible\u2014is bearing the heaviest burden<\/strong>.
