Nairobi, Kenya<\/strong> \u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n A vibrant gathering of artists, technologists, educators, and cultural thinkers is underway in Nairobi, as the city plays host to a global symposium exploring how technology can preserve, reinterpret, and elevate indigenous knowledge systems in the digital era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The three-day event, themed \u201cHeritage in the Digital Age: An Exploration of Indigenous Knowledge and Technology,\u201d<\/strong> is a flagship activity of the UK\/Kenya Season 2025<\/strong>, and part of a broader international effort to promote cultural exchange, innovation, and sustainable heritage practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Running from 24 to 26 July<\/strong>, the symposium will also see follow-up sessions later this year in Lagos, Nigeria<\/strong> and London, UK<\/strong> \u2014 reflecting its global scope and intent to foster ongoing dialogue across continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n Participants from more than 16 countries<\/strong> \u2014 including Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa, Vietnam, Egypt, and the UK \u2014 are attending the event. Together, they represent a rich tapestry of perspectives on how communities can leverage digital tools to safeguard, share, and evolve their cultural identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The event builds on successful editions held in 2020<\/strong> and 2022<\/strong>, with this year\u2019s focus shifting toward grassroots-driven approaches<\/strong> to heritage conservation, especially in regions facing conflict or climate challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ruth McKenzie CBE<\/strong>, Director of Arts at the British Council, emphasized the broader significance of cultural heritage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOur cultural heritage is more than memory \u2014 it\u2019s a space for creativity and social progress. Through the conversations in Nairobi, we\u2019re exploring how to responsibly use technology to support local traditions and inclusive narratives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Maureen Anzaye<\/strong>, who leads the British Council\u2019s Cultural Heritage Programme<\/strong>, added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis forum puts community voices at the center of heritage work.
