Gituto, Murang\u2019a \u2013 July 17, 2025<\/em> \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speaking during a public participation forum at the newly established Ativet Institution in Gituto \u2014 named in honour of the late Kenneth Matipa \u2014 Nyoro criticised what he described as \u201cexorbitant levies and hidden loans\u201d imposed by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe real problem is not global fuel prices \u2014 it\u2019s the taxes and levies our own government continues to impose. The KSh 7 levy is the main reason Kenyans didn\u2019t benefit when international prices fell,\u201d said Nyoro.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n While acknowledging responses from the Ministries of Energy and Transport, the MP expressed disappointment in the National Treasury\u2019s handling of the issue, accusing it of dodging accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s shocking to see the Treasury Cabinet Secretary resort to diversionary tactics. That docket should be based on facts, not theory. You cannot speak vaguely when dealing with figures \u2014 they are stubborn and demand honesty,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n According to Nyoro, the government has admitted that proceeds from the KSh 7 levy were used as collateral for a domestic loan \u2014 a debt Kenyans will continue to repay for the next seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe public has a right to know: how much will they have paid by the time the loan matures? Why isn\u2019t this debt listed in the national debt register? Why is it kept off the books and hidden from the public and financial institutions?\u201d he questioned.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Nyoro called for full disclosure and accountability, urging the government to come clean on the matter and ensure transparency in the handling of taxes and national debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKenyans are overburdened.
