Kenya\u2019s biggest telecoms operator Safaricom will consider awarding a contract to China\u2019s Huawei as it rolls out its fifth generation (5G) network this year, its acting chief executive said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United States government has been urging\n its European allies and others not to use Huawei, one of Safaricom\u2019s \nnetwork vendors along with Nokia, citing security concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\n will use Huawei in 5G … What will we do in terms of the American \nstatements about not using Huawei? We don\u2019t have that situation in \nAfrica,\u201d Acting CEO Michael Joseph said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Involving \nHuawei in Safaricom\u2019s 5G network could hamper talks on a free trade \nagreement between the United States and Kenya, which were announced this\n month, analysts said. \u201cThey would have to figure a way of working it \nout just the same way that the UK is trying to figure it out,\u201d said Eric\n Musau of Standard Investment Bank in Nairobi, after Britain said Huawei\n could have only a limited role in its 5G network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr \nJoseph said Safaricom would follow guidelines from its two main \nshareholders, South Africa\u2019s Vodacom and Britain\u2019s Vodafone. \u201cThere is \ndemand for more and more bandwidth, more and more speed,\u201d he said, \nadding that 5G services network would first be offered to customers in \nmajor cities where demand was highest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
