NAIROBI, Kenya, October 31
In the arid plains of Tana River County, a powerful partnership between global nutrition leader Kerry and humanitarian agency Concern Worldwide is transforming lives. Their joint initiative, known as the ‘ALIVE’ programme, is equipping smallholder farmers with tools and knowledge to fight food insecurity, adapt to climate change, and build sustainable livelihoods.
For thousands of families across rural Kenya, small-scale farming remains a high-stakes struggle — with erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and volatile market prices threatening their main source of food and income. The four-year ALIVE project directly tackles these challenges by introducing climate-smart agriculture, better access to quality inputs, and stronger market linkages.
The programme, which is expected to benefit more than 6,000 people, also places a deliberate focus on empowering women farmers, recognizing their central role in household nutrition and community development.
“We are committed to improving the lives of farmers and their families in Tana River by removing the barriers they face,” said Fawzia Jamal, Kerry’s Marketing Director for Africa. “Through climate-smart solutions and vital nutrition support, we are creating lasting value for those most affected by food insecurity. We are proud to partner with Concern Worldwide to make Zero Hunger a reality in Kenya.”
The collaboration merges Kerry’s global expertise in sustainable nutrition with Concern Worldwide’s long-standing experience in community development. Together, they aim to build resilience among farming households through training, access to finance, and health awareness.
Alex Ogeto, Country Programme Manager for Concern Worldwide Kenya, noted the tangible impact already being felt on the ground.
“This programme is already changing livelihoods here in Tana River,” he said. “By providing farmers with new skills, capital, and access to markets, we are seeing a direct improvement in incomes, nutrition, and overall community well-being. With the right support, initiatives like this could empower millions across Kenya.”
By investing in smallholder farmers — the backbone of Kenya’s food system — the ALIVE programme underscores the growing importance of local, sustainable solutions in the fight against hunger and climate vulnerability.
